From Resolution to Evolution: Set Goals with Emotional Intelligence & Purpose
As the new year begins, many of us set bold resolutions, envisioning transformative change. Yet, too often, these plans lose momentum just as quickly as they start.
In our last Culture Community session, we explored a fresh approach to goal-setting—one that creates lasting fulfillment & meaningful progress. Instead of asking what you want to accomplish, start with: How do I want to feel?
The Compass vs. The Clock: Leading with Purpose
What comes first—the compass or the clock? If you’ve ever felt like you’re racing against time without a clear destination, you’re not alone.
The compass represents your purpose—the “why” behind your actions, where you are going, what your priorities & goals are, in which direction you are headed. The clock focuses on execution & time management. While efficiency matters, as Amy Jen Su states, “If you’re moving quickly in the wrong direction, it doesn’t actually bring the results you want.”
Before diving into tasks, take a step back:
Where am I going?
What truly matters?
Clarity of direction is far more important than speed. By leading with purpose, you set goals that are both meaningful & sustainable.
2. Start with How You Want to Feel
Traditional goal-setting asks, “What do you want to achieve?” Instead, shift the focus to: “How do you want to feel?”
Your Core Feelings act as an emotional GPS, guiding you toward goals that align with your authentic self. As Danielle LaPorte says, "You’re not chasing the goal itself. You’re chasing the feelings you hope attaining the goal will give you.”
How to Define Your Core Feelings:
Reflect on Your Best Moments – Think of a time when you felt truly fulfilled, accomplished, or inspired. What emotions were present? Where did you feel them in your body?
Use a Feelings Wheel – Move beyond broad terms like “happy” or “successful.” Do you want to feel grounded, motivated, valued, or connected?
Choose Your Core Four – Narrow it down to four key emotions you want to experience regularly.
By setting goals based on how you want to feel, success becomes more than achievement—it becomes fulfillment.
3. Purpose Quadrants: A Framework for Focus
Once you’ve identified your Core Feelings, the next step is aligning your time & energy with tasks that create the greatest impact. The Purpose Quadrants framework helps you organize & prioritize where to invest your efforts.
Quadrant I: Prioritize – Your sweet spot! These tasks energize you & create maximum impact.
Quadrant II: Tolerate – Important but not exciting. These act as stepping stones for long-term success.
Quadrant III: Elevate – Tasks you love but aren’t yet recognized as high-value. Time to advocate for them or take on new challenges!
Quadrant IV: Delegate – Low-value tasks that drain your energy. Delegate, outsource, or eliminate them to avoid burnout.
By structuring your work around these quadrants, you ensure your energy is spent on what truly matters—creating both fulfillment & results.
Pro Tip: Color-code your calendar using these quadrants to gain clarity on where your energy goes—& where adjustments may be needed.
4. Purpose in Action
Purpose isn’t static—it evolves as we do. The key is to revisit your compass regularly. When making decisions, ask yourself:
Will this choice create my core feelings?
Will it allow me to operate in Quadrant I (Prioritize)?
By staying connected to your purpose, you’ll build a life & career aligned with what truly matters.
Goal-setting isn’t about adding to your to-do list—it’s about aligning your actions with how you want to feel & where you can have the greatest impact.
When you shift from resolution to evolution, growth becomes a journey, not just a destination.
