Unlocking the Power of 360 Evaluations: Insights & Best Practices

See this content in the original post

At The Perk, we’ve seen firsthand the transformative impact 360 evaluations can have on leaders & teams. If you’re considering implementing them, here are some key factors that have been game changers for us:

1. Focus on Qualitative Questions

While quantitative questions are helpful for data tracking, we’ve found that qualitative feedback provides the most actionable insights. Some of the best questions we’ve used include:

  • What is one thing this person should keep doing?

  • What should they start doing?

  • What should they stop doing?

These questions go beyond numbers & scores. They open the door for specific, tailored feedback that leaders can actually use to enhance their effectiveness. When individuals receive this kind of direct input, they gain a clear roadmap for how to grow & develop their leadership capabilities.

2. Pair the Assessment with a Coaching Session

360 reports can often feel overwhelming. Data without context or guidance might leave individuals unsure of how to take action. That’s why we pair each 360 review with a coaching session. The coach, who is an objective third party, walks participants through their report, helping them make sense of the feedback & identify actionable steps. This ensures that leaders move beyond merely reviewing data to actively working on improvement. We also have participants fill out a 360 Reflection Sheet after their session to clarify their commitments to what they will keep, start, & stop doing.

3. Group Assessments for Collective Insights

We’ve found immense value in conducting 360 evaluations in groups, such as the executive team or middle management cohort. This approach not only gives individuals a personal roadmap for improvement but also allows us to identify broader trends within a leadership level. For example, by reviewing results for an entire management team, we can see where the group collectively excels & where development opportunities lie. This insight becomes the foundation for creating targeted training & development programs that help the team grow together. If you’re new to 360 evaluations or have any questions, I’m happy to chat more about our experiences! We love using them at The Perk because they truly drive meaningful behavior change & improve leadership performance.
