We believe that 1:1 meetings are powerful tools to deepen relationships, develop leaders, & move work forward. They aren’t just a time to check off tasks but a space for meaningful dialogue, problem-solving, & growth.

Why 1:1s Matter :

1:1 meetings are much more than status updates. They’re opportunities to:

  • Build strong, trusting relationships between leaders & their team members.

  • Offer & receive feedback in a focused, private setting.

  • Support personal & professional growth through coaching & mentorship.

By approaching these meetings with intention, leaders can create a space where their teams feel valued, heard, & supported. This boosts both team morale & productivity.

Common Challenges in 1:1s

During the session, we highlighted three common obstacles leaders face when running 1:1s:

1. Topics Feel Stale

It’s easy for 1:1s to turn into a routine rundown of to-do lists & client updates. Many participants expressed feeling stuck in repetitive conversations without real progress or excitement.

2. Time Constraints

With so much on our plates, finding the time to prepare for & lead effective 1:1s can feel overwhelming.

How to Make 1:1s Productive & Engaging

To overcome these challenges, we shared actionable strategies for revitalizing your 1:1 meetings:

Focus on Connection

Start each meeting with a personal or professional check-in to build rapport & trust. Remember, these meetings aren’t just about work—they’re about the person behind the work.

Use a Prep Form

Have your team members prepare in advance by answering a set of reflection questions. This saves you both time & ensures the conversation is tailored to their needs. We provided attendees with our custom one-on-one prep form template, which includes prompts like:

  • “What progress have you made this week?”

  • “What challenges are you facing?”

Shift from Consultant to Coach

As leaders, it’s tempting to jump in & solve problems. But the real value comes from coaching your team to solve challenges on their own. By asking powerful “what” questions (e.g., “What’s getting in your way?” or “What would success look like for you?”), you empower them to think critically & find solutions.

Building Trust Through 1:1s

One of the most powerful takeaways from the session was the role of 1:1s in building trust. Research shows that 60% of workers say that regular 1:1s help establish trust faster than any other team-building activity. In an age where loneliness is on the rise, especially in remote work environments, taking the time to connect on a personal level during 1:1s is more important than ever.

Elevate Your 1:1s, Elevate Your Team

Take your 1:1s to the next level. By shifting their approach from status updates to meaningful conversations, leaders can foster an environment of trust, growth, & progress.
