Micromanagement vs. Project Management

“Your boss micromanaging you is like someone walking behind you in a dark alley, in terms of what it does to your brain.” - Dr. Rachel Cistern Davis, Ph.D.

Just in case you needed a little neuroscience to go with your daily dose of why micromanaging is NOT the way to lead…Micromanaging is difficult & fascinating because it means something different to everyone. Micromanagement lives on a spectrum - what feels like micromanagement to me may feel like great leadership to a peer. What feels like freedom & autonomy for me (i.e. the way I work best), might feel like total abandonment & being left alone on an island to someone else.

We each define & feel micromanagement differently, it’s important that you discuss it with your team:Find out where they lie on the micromanagement spectrum. Check in with them often & ask for feedback on your leadership style & if/when they feel micromanaged by you.

Create a culture that’s safe to alert you when they feel micromanaged.

Talk about micromanagement - make it a normal topic of conversation & not a taboo subject. The hard truth is that if your team feels like they’re being micromanaged, then they are. If they feel like you are walking behind them in a dark alley, then you are. So talk about it! Shine a light on that alley & walk beside them!
